Carl Jung in his obsession with the unconscious mind, Jung formed the theories of collective consciousness to help explain human behavior. He ended up forming individual psychology and introduced the concept of introversion and extroversion.

According to Carl Jung, extroversion refers to the tendency of an individual to influence and be influenced by external events. The individual has an interest in the external world, they tend to respond and accept events as they unfold. They have a need to join the bustle and noise of every kind, deeming them enjoyable. They cultivate their relationships with acquaintances and friends and constantly seek attention

The main difference between an introvert and an extrovert is how they recharge their energy. The introvert would prefer to be alone whereas the extrovert would search for a social environment to recharge.

Extroversion has also been defined as extraversion. It was the first term that was given by Carl Jung in 1917.

The causes of extroversion has been attributed to genetics and the environment. A twin study revealed that there is a 40% contribution of genetics to extroversion in a person.

Characteristics of Extroversion

An individual considered to be an extrovert would feel caged when they spend too much time on their own. They end up feeling anxious and bored easily.

An extrovert, tends to exhibit characteristics such as assertiveness, talkativeness and sociability. They are often in environments with high social energy. They are often described as full of life and energy, other characteristics include;

  • Engaging
  • Cheerful
  • Active
  • Attention seekers
  • Assertive
  • Warm
  • Tend to be very open with their emotions and feelings
  • Seek fun and excitement
  • Out-going
  • Easily distracted
  • can be impulsive

An example of an extrovert would be that person wo tends to be the life of the party, the friend who is never alone always surrounded by other people, the person who always has something to say and the friend who always finds more fun ways to spend your time.
